After loving the First Kill short story by V.E. Schwab I got very excited for this Netflix show. I love V.E. Schwab, I love vampires and I love a good sapphic romance. On June 10th the first season dropped and after watching the first couple of episodes I wanted to share my first opinions. Let’s jump in!
Falling in love is tricky for teens Juliette and Calliope: One’s a vampire, the other’s a vampire hunter and both are ready to make their first kill.
Last Friday the first season of First Kill got dropped on Netflix. We got 8 episodes of about 45 minutes each. I’ve watched the first few episodes so far and I will watch the rest this coming week for sure.
As I said, I read the short story this was based on and really liked that. The first episode is basically the short story and I loved how that ended. After that we got all new content and I was so curious what would happen.
As expected this show has quite some cliches and I wasn’t super surprised at most of the things that were happening. I will say I was surprised by one or two things that enfolded and I’m very excited to see what will happen there. While I don’t know how the rest of the season will go, I do hope we’ll get a second season.
I’ve seen a lot of people being critical of this show. And while I do agree with some of the criticism, a lot is a bit stupid in my opinion. Male the CGI isn’t the best, but this is clearly a smaller budget show and I don’t get bothered by that. While Juliette seems totally in love, Call doesn’t but to me it was more that Call doesn’t yet and that’s okay.
I think the characters are interesting, the story isn’t completely unique but I am invested and I want to know more. We are learning more and more about the world and I love the little pop culture references we are getting. Overall I would definitely say give this one a go and give it more than just one episode. I’m sure you’ll get invested! Are you watching yet? Do you plan on watching? Let me know in the comments!
I watched the first episode yesterday and liked it, will watch one a day hopefully!
I’m mostly enjoying it – I’m half way through now. I find the two MCs the least interesting characters; they’re kinda bland / archetypes – but I like the mythos and the fierce mothers and dangerous sister and mysterious brother (Cal’s brothers not so much; they’re rather one dimensional), although I want to know who is funding the Hunters and that detail will drive me wild if it doesn’t get explored. Ugh the fight choreography / cinematography is pretty ordinary though. Very stagey!
For me it’s fun and easy watching, but feels kinda disposable – I don’t know if it’s a limited season or set up for more, but it still has a lot of work to do to get me back for a second season if it isn’t limited!
