Looking Back at Our Bookhauls| April 2021

It’s that time of month again that we take a look back at our bookhaul from last year to see if we read what we add to our shelves. We hope to keep ourselves motivated to pick up the books we buy or receive. Some months go better than the others, haha.

This month we’re looking back at our bookhaul from April 2021. How did we do? Keep on reading to find out!

Candyce

Before even looking at what I added to my collection in April I had a feeling I didn’t do too well, haha. And I was right. In April 2021 11 books were added to my shelves: I bought 5, received 5, and 1 was from a publisher. So let’s see what I got.

The Girl with All the Gifts – M.R. Carey
Unread

The Girl with All the Gifts seems to be a book you should read knowing as little as possible. I do actually need to pick it up, haha. I have a feeling this is more of a fall read though, so I’m determined to read it then.

Moxie – Jennifer Mathieu
Unread

So it’s been a year and I still haven’t watched the movie or read the book, haha. I still think Moxie is a book that probably won’t take me long to read. Hopefully I can finally make time to pick it up and then watch the movie.

Our Year of Maybe – Rachel Lynn Solomon
Unread

Out of all the books on this list today I’m most surprised I haven’t read Our Year of Maybe. I was actually just looking at it last week, because I really want to read it. Rachel Lynn Solomon has become an auto-buy author to me after Today Tonight Tomorrow, The Ex Talk, and Weather Girl.

Winterwood – Shea Ernshaw
Unread

Shea Ernshaw is an author that creates dark worlds and leaves you really curious about what happens next. I loved The Wicked Deep and A History of Wild Places. Again, this was a book I was looking at recently to read. I just want to read too much at once.

Parachutes – Kelly Yang
Unread

Parachutes is a contemporary I’ve been really curious about and I was really surprised about how big it was. I’m reading a lot of bigger books this year, so I should make sure Parachutes is one added to that list.

Among the Beasts & Briars – Ashley Poston
Unread

Look at this stunning cover!! Among the Beasts & Briars is a book I actually did start reading last year. I think I got about 25% in. And once again I got distracted by another book, haha. I really get in my own way at times!

Last Night at the Telegraph Club – Malinda Lo
Unread

This book was everywhere when it released and got so many amazing reviews. Last Night at the Telegraph Club sounds like an amazing book even though it may be hard to read at times. I really need more time in the day to read everything, haha.

House of Hollow – Krystal Sutherland
Read

Yay! Finally a book I’ve read, haha. House of Hollow had such a dark and creepy vibe. I did end up guessing the twist near the end, but this was one I still enjoyed. Krystal Sutherland is an author I’ll be keeping an eye on.

Firekeeper’s Daughter – Angeline Boulley
Unread

Okay, so I actually really need to finish this one. Firekeeper’s Daughter is another book I did start reading and ended up reading over half of this book. What I’ve read so far was intense, but really good. So I need to get to the ending.

The Crown of Gilded Bones – Jennifer L. Armentrout
Unread

So another book I’m actually shocked I haven’t read. The Crown of Gilded Bones is definitely one I wanted to pick up right away after finishing A Kingdom of Flesh and Fire. I had a harder time with bigger books last year, but I’ve been flying through them this year, so it’s definitely going to the top of my list.

The (Un)Popular Vote – Jasper Sanchez
Unread

I received this ARC last year and it’s one I really should’ve already read. Last year I ended up getting a bit overwhelmed with everything I “had” to read, so some books got pushed back on my list. Like a couple of other books this one just sound like a great summer read.

End Result:
Read: 1/11 – 9.1%
TBR:
10/11 – 90.9%

Isabelle

I seem to recall this was a pretty big haul, so the question is did I read any of it haha. 14 books were added to my collection, novels, graphic novels, manga and even a poetry book. Let’s see what I’ve read!

The Bone Shard Daughter – Andrea Stewart
unread

I really want to read this one, so I’m pretty sad I still haven’t read it yet. It was a birthday gift and I think it might be a 5 star read for me. Hopefully I can pick it up soon!

Lore – Alexandra Bracken
unread

Another birthday gift! I love Alexandra Bracken and I’m excited to pick up another book by her. This one sounds really cool and like something I would highly enjoy. So this is another one I have high expectations for.

SpyxFamily 1 – Tatsuya Endo
read

I really enjoyed this manga! It was a fun read and would love to read the rest of the series. Definitely one I have on my wishlist. It was different from what I was expecting but in a good way!

The Apothecary Diaries 1 – Natsu Hyuuga
read

Another manga. I somehow was expecting a fantasy story but that was not the case haha. This is a historical story which I also enjoy but I was waiting for something magical to happen right up until the end haha. Still, it was enjoyable!

This Is Not the Jess Show – Anna Carey
read

I was really excited for this one and it was enjoyable but it wasn’t as good as I was hoping for it to be. It’s the first book in a series but I don’t think I’ll read the sequel to be honest.

The Inheritance Games – Jennifer Lynn Barnes
read

This is such a good book!! I also loved loved loved the second book and the third book in the series is one of my most anticipated releases for this year. Jennifer Lynn Barnes is one of my favorite writers and I’m glad she is finally getting more recognition.

Before the Devil Breaks You – Libba Bray
unread

I loved the first book in the series but I still have to read the second book. This is book 3 so it might be awhile before I actually read this one. Hopefully not too long because I’ve already forgotten a lot of details from book 1 haha.

They Wish They Were Us – Jessica Goodman
read

A YA mystery set at a private prep school with a ‘secret’ society. You know it’s something I love! So I ate this up! I need more books like this haha, and hopefully I’ll get some soon. Jessica Goodman is definitely on my radar after this one.

Fruits Basket 3 – Natsuki Takaya
read

This manga series is really cute and I definitely want the rest of the series as well. I enjoy it a lot! The one downside it that there are a ton of characters and some of them look a like a lot. So every now and then I’m confused as to who is who haha.

A Dark and Hollow Star – Ashley Shuttleworth
unread

This was a gift from Candyce, she had this one double. I haven’t been in the mood for it yet, but I am curious about it. The cover has some great colors and is overall quite pretty so that’s always a plus haha.

Blessed Monsters – Emily A. Duncan
unread

Why have I not read this one yet? I was very frustrated after the end of book 2 and would’ve loved to be able to jump into book 3 right away. And now I’ve had that book for a year and I still haven’t read it yet haha. Hopefully soon!!

Rule of Wolves – Leigh Bardugo
read

This one I did read and I loved it so so much. The Grishaverse is one of my favorites out there and I would love more books set there haha. These characters are also awesome and I just love reading about them so much. I adored this book and might reread it all soon again!

The Hill We Climb – Amanda Gorman
read

This is the inaugural poem from last year and I was really impressed by it. So I wanted to support Amanda Gorman and I also wanted to be able to read the poem again and again. Really happy I purchased this one!

Descender – Jeff Lemire & Dustin Nguyen
read

And lastly this amazing graphic novel. I enjoyed this one so much! It was a great read and I need to get the next instalments soon. There are only 6 volumes so it should be easy to get this one complete.

End Result:
Read: 9/14 – 65%
TBR:
 5/14 – 35%

So that’s our looking back at our bookhaul for this month! Have you read any of the books we talked about? What did you think? Let us know in the comments! We’d love to hear from you.
