It Will End Like This is a book that I was curious about after seeing the cover. Definitely has me asking questions. After reading the summary and realized that inspiration came from the Lizzie Borden story I was intrigued. This month I finally sat down to read this book. Keep on reading to find out more about this book and my thoughts!
For fans of The Cheerleaders and Sadie comes a psychological thriller that reminds us that in real life, endings are rarely as neat as happily ever after. A contemporay take on the Lizzie Borden story that explores how grief can cut deep.
Charlotte lost her mother six months ago, and still no one will tell her exactly what happened the day she mysteriously died. They say her heart stopped, but Charlotte knows deep down that there’s more to the story.
The only person who gets it is Charlotte’s sister, Maddi. Maddi agrees—people’s hearts don’t just stop. There are too many questions left unanswered for the girls to move on.
But their father is moving on. With their mother’s personal assistant. And both girls are sure that she’s determined to take everything that’s theirs away for herself.
Now the only way to get their lives back is for Charlotte and Maddi to decide how this story ends, themselves.
Review
It Will End Like This is a book that had me sucked in from the start. For the first time in ages I actually read a book in one sitting. The writing style and short chapters make it hard for you to step. Add some intense emotions and trying to figure out how everything will play out and it was over before I knew it.
This story isn’t only a thriller/mystery, but is also a story about two characters grieving their mother’s death. I can’t imagine how it feels. Especially when it happens so suddenly. It was interesting that we got Charlotte and Maddi’s POV and showed us that they were both grieving in different ways. It especially hit home when we got glimpses of the past and their memories with their mother.
Besides Charlotte and Maddi dealing with the loss of their mother it’s also clear there are a lot of family secrets. Their mother’s assistant, Amber, is now with their father. Was there an affair? Poison is found, so how did their mother really die? On top of that they find letters written by their mother. So what is true? I have to say these moments were pretty intense. Even though quite a bit is solved before the end I loved that there are some moments that leave you wondering what really happened.
All in all, It Will End Like This is an emotional and intense story. I definitely recommend this one for a dark and stormy night!
It Will End Like This was definitely quite the ride. Kyra Leigh is an author I’ll be keeping an eye on. I can’t wait to see what she writes next!
