Ashley Herring Blake is an author I’m familiar with, because of her middle grade books. I’ve loved the books I’ve read and they all hit me in the feels. So I was really excited to see this author was writing a queer and steamy romantic comedy. I was really lucky to receive an e-arc on Edelweiss and want to talk about Delilah Green Doesn’t Care that releases next Tuesday! Keep on reading to find out more!
A clever and steamy queer romantic comedy about taking chances and accepting love—with all its complications—by debut author Ashley Herring Blake.
Delilah Green swore she would never go back to Bright Falls—nothing is there for her but memories of a lonely childhood where she was little more than a burden to her cold and distant stepfamily. Her life is in New York, with her photography career finally gaining steam and her bed never empty. Sure, it’s a different woman every night, but that’s just fine with her.
When Delilah’s estranged stepsister, Astrid, pressures her into photographing her wedding with a guilt trip and a five-figure check, Delilah finds herself back in the godforsaken town that she used to call home. She plans to breeze in and out, but then she sees Claire Sutherland, one of Astrid’s stuck-up besties, and decides that maybe there’s some fun (and a little retribution) to be had in Bright Falls, after all.
Having raised her eleven-year-old daughter mostly on her own while dealing with her unreliable ex and running a bookstore, Claire Sutherland depends upon a life without surprises. And Delilah Green is an unwelcome surprise…at first. Though they’ve known each other for years, they don’t really know each other—so Claire is unsettled when Delilah figures out exactly what buttons to push. When they’re forced together during a gauntlet of wedding preparations—including a plot to save Astrid from her horrible fiancé—Claire isn’t sure she has the strength to resist Delilah’s charms. Even worse, she’s starting to think she doesn’t want to…
Review
So I had a feeling I was going to love Delilah Green Doesn’t Care and I was so right. As soon as I started reading this book I just didn’t want to put it down. This book made me laugh, swoon, and even cry. Besides an amazing romance there was a lot of time spent on friendship and family. It just had everything I needed.
Delilah is not looking forward to going back to Bright Falls. She didn’t have the greatest childhood there and there’s still a lot of hurt, but she could use the money she’s receiving as a photographer for her stepsister’s wedding. Delilah was such an interesting character. Her family expects her to mess up or be weird, so she keeps that persona around, but that’s not her at all. There’s a lot of hurt and someone who just wants to be loved. As the romance with Claire develops I loved seeing her light up and really start looking at her past. What she wants may be in reach after all.
Claire was another amazing character. Getting pregnant young wasn’t part of the plan, but she wouldn’t trade Ruby for the world. That being said she definitely hasn’t chose stuff for herself for quite some time. Claire is loving and protective of who she loves, but also has a hard time with confrontation. It was nice seeing her pick something for herself even if it got messy.
The romance in this book was complicated, sweet, and steamy. Claire and Delilah truly see the other even when they don’t see it themselves and their chemistry jumps off the page. Everything may start off casual, but it doesn’t take long too see it’s much more. There was an amazing balance between the romance and other aspects of this story.
On top of the amazing romance the cast of side characters was perfect. Ruby (Claire’s daughter) was really sweet, her ex Josh was definitely trying, Iris was just a nut and Delilah’s sister Astrid became a character I can’t wait to read about. I don’t want to give away too many details, because you need to experience this one as you go. I can tell you that Delilah Green Doesn’t Care has everything a romantic comedy needs.
Delilah Green Doesn’t Care has officially become one of my favorites of 2022! These characters have a special place in my heart and I can’t wait for the next book. Are you a fan of romantic comedies? What are some of your favorites? Let me know in the comments!
