Bookish Beginnings on Friday | Empire of the Vampire – Jay Kristoff

The last bookish beginnings was a couple of months ago so I decided it was time for another one! This meme was created by Rose City Reader. The idea is to post the first sentence or so of the book you’re currently reading. After that you talk about your initial thoughts about the sentence, book or anything to do with that. I’m very excited to read Empire of the Vampire but it’s also a bit daunting. But I finally started it! So let’s jump in.

From holy cup comes holy light;
The faithful hands sets world aright.
And in the Seven Martyrs’ sight,
Mere man shall end this endless night.

It has been twenty-seven long years since the last sunrise. For nearly three decades, vampires have waged war against humanity; building their eternal empire even as they tear down our own. Now, only a few tiny sparks of light endure in a sea of darkness.

Gabriel de León is a silversaint: a member of a holy brotherhood dedicated to defending realm and church from the creatures of the night. But even the Silver Order couldn’t stem the tide once daylight failed us, and now, only Gabriel remains.

Imprisoned by the very monsters he vowed to destroy, the last silversaint is forced to tell his story. A story of legendary battles and forbidden love, of faith lost and friendships won, of the Wars of the Blood and the Forever King and the quest for humanity’s last remaining hope:

The Holy Grail.

I want to share two first sentences. The actual first sentence and the first sentence of the first chapter.

Ask me not if God exists, but why he’s such a prick.

and

It was the twenty-seventh year of daysdeath in the realm of the Forever King, and his murderer was waiting to die.

These first sentences did not disappoint! I think the first one gives that sarcastic Jay Kristoff vibe and definitely promises something good for the rest of the book. Hopefully our protagonist while be a sarcastic prick haha.

The second first sentence immediately draws me in. From the synopsis I kind of get what daysdeath is but I can’t wait to find out more about the Forever King and what is going on with his murderer. This promises to be a dark book and I have high hopes for that.

I’m very excited to dive into this book and even though it’s a big one I hope to finish it this year. With a couple of chapters a day that should be doable! There’s no way I’m hitting my reading goals but it would be great if I at least finished some big books from my TBR. Have you read Empire of the Vampire yet? Or do you plan on reading it? What do you think of these first sentences? Let me know in the comments!
