Review | Spoiler Alert – Olivia Dade

We all have books we’re really looking forward to and I had quite a few. One of these books was Spoiler Alert. I’ve been wanting to read it since the book released in October and finally had the chance to read it last month. Keep on reading to find out what I thought!

A delightfully fun romantic comedy set in the world of fanfiction, in which a devoted fan goes on an unexpected date with her celebrity crush, who’s secretly posting fanfiction of his own. With romance, amazing chemistry, fandom, and body positivity, Spoiler Alert is perfect for fans of Talia Hibbert and Abby Jimenez.

Marcus Caster-Rupp has a secret. While the world knows him as Aeneas, the star of the biggest show on TV, he’s known to fanfiction readers as Book!AeneasWouldNever, an anonymous and popular poster. Through his stories, Marcus is able to get out his own frustrations with his character, especially the ones that feature the internet’s favourite couple to ship, Aeneas and Lavinia. But if anyone ever found out about his online persona, he’d be fired. Immediately.

April Whittier has secrets of her own. A hardcore Lavinia fan, she’s hidden her fanfiction and cosplay hobby from her ‘real life’ for years – but not anymore. When she decides to post her latest Lavinia creation on Twitter, her photo goes viral. Trolls and supporters alike are commenting on her plus-size take, but when Marcus sees her pic and asks her out on a date to spite her critics, she realises life is really stranger than fanfiction.

Even though their first date is a disaster, Marcus quickly realises that he wants much more from April than a one-time publicity stunt. And when he discovers she’s actually Unapologetic Lavinia Stan, his closest fandom friend, he has one more huge secret to hide from her.

With love and Marcus’s career on the line, can the two of them stop hiding once and for all, or will a match made in fandom end up prematurely cancelled?

Review

“She loved shiny thungs, always had. But he wasn’t a diamond. Just fool’s gold.”

As a big fan of romcoms, I had really high hopes and expectations for Spoiler Alert and this book lived up to every single one of them! Olivia Dade really sucked me in and made me love these characters and had me hoping for their happily ever after from the start.

As a reader, I love when characters have their own fandoms and are really involved. April is a fan fiction author and really involved in the community. Marcus as well. Even if that’s a big secret, haha. I loved all of the little glimpses of fan fiction and shows Marcus has played in during his career. They definitely added an extra element to this story and made me laugh. There being a convention near the end of the book was definitely the icing on the cake.

The romance in this book was also the best. April and Marcus are far from perfect and have their own insecurities. That being said, they brought out the best in each other. Their relationship didn’t always go smoothly, but what relationship does?!? Each of them wanted the other to realize how great they are and were very protective of each other. Spoiler Alert had me laughing, hit me in all the feels and was definitely rather steamy at times. Yes, their relationship had some drama, but it didn’t feel over the top at all.

“He’d give her love because she deserved it, and because he couldn’t help it. He was so fucking smitten with her, his adoration spilled from him like water from a fountain or blood from a wound. He exhaled love with every breath. It floated behind him with each step, bright as fireflies in the dark of night. Most of all: he’d give her love because he wanted to earn her love in return.”

Besides their romance, April and Marcus have things from their past that made them insecure in certain aspects of their lives. This mostly involves their parents and my heart broke for both of them. It was amazing seeing them lean on the other for strength and stand up for themselves and their feelings. I’m sure they would’ve gotten there on their own, but it was nice to see them help each other in that way.

I guess the only thing I would’ve wanted more of is the side characters. We meet some of Olivia’s coworkers that become friends and Marcus’ best friend Alex. I wish they would’ve had just a little more time in the story, but other than that I can’t think of anything I didn’t like. Spoiler Alert is one of my favorite books this year and I know I’ll be doing a re-read in the future. I highly recommend this book!

Spoiler Alert really had everything I wanted and more! I’ll be anxiously awaiting the sequel releasing next year. I also need to take a look at Olivia Dade’s backlist. I think I may have found a new author I need to catch up on. Have you read anything written by Olivia Dade? If you have, I’d love to hear from you in the comments!
