Review| Aurora Rising – Amie Kaufman & Jay Kristoff

Aurora Rising has been a book on my radar since its release. I actually even had it on my shelf the day it released, haha. Except it took me a year to read (oops!), haha. Then again, after reading the ending, I’m happy I waited closer to release day. Let’s talk about what I thought about the first book in The Aurora Cycle!

Review| Aurora Rising – Amie Kaufman & Jay Kristoff

From the internationally bestselling authors of THE ILLUMINAE FILES comes an epic new science fiction adventure.
The year is 2380, and the graduating cadets of Aurora Academy are being assigned their first missions. Star pupil Tyler Jones is ready to recruit the squad of his dreams, but his own boneheaded heroism sees him stuck with the dregs nobody else in the Academy would touch…
A cocky diplomat with a black belt in sarcasmA sociopath scientist with a fondness for shooting her bunkmatesA smart-ass techwiz with the galaxy’s biggest chip on his shoulderAn alien warrior with anger management issuesA tomboy pilot who’s totally not into him, in case you were wondering
And Ty’s squad isn’t even his biggest problem—that’d be Aurora Jie-Lin O’Malley, the girl he’s just rescued from interdimensional space. Trapped in cryo-sleep for two centuries, Auri is a girl out of time and out of her depth. But she could be the catalyst that starts a war millions of years in the making, and Tyler’s squad of losers, discipline-cases and misfits might just be the last hope for the entire galaxy.

They're not the heroes we deserve. They're just the ones we could find. Nobody panic.

Review

Science fiction isn’t a genre I’ve read a lot of, but I really loved The Illuminae Files by this duo! So I was excited to read their next adventure. And it didn’t disappoint. This book was everything I wanted and more even though it hit me in all the feels. Let’s just say the book hurts, but I’m always impressed when authors can make me feel something while reading.

“But they have not seen their sun die. Their people burn. Their world end. And they do not know, yet, that there are some breaks that cannot be fixed.”

Aurora Rising introduces us to Squad 312. They just finished the Academy and are on their way to start a mission. Even if things didn’t go as planned. Let’s just say it’s a group of misfits or at least not the group Tyler was expecting. I loved that about this book. Even though these six didn’t expect to be together, they learn to work together (even if it doesn’t always go smoothly). Aurora Rising is filled with amazing sarcasm and had me laughing as much as it had me on the edge of my seat when things were about to go wrong!

Aurora wakes up almost 200 years later and has no clue what’s going on. Her waking up definitely triggered things, because everyone seems to want her and they don’t know why! I can’t imagine waking up so many years later finding out nothing is the way it was when you went to sleep. I don’t think I would’ve responded as well as she does, haha. Even though Aurora isn’t my favorite character, she’s interesting!

“Um, sir?” Finian de Seel says. “We might have a problem.” “You mean aside from you interrupting my speech? Because I’d been practicing it in my head for an hour and it was gonna be great.”

There are so many amazing characters and twists and turns that are amazing! I don’t want to go into everything, because there are so many things I really think readers need to experience themselves, but believe me when I say that this a squad you want to go on an adventure with! These authors make you believe things are going good and then hit you in the face with a twist you don’t see coming. I never expected that ending! Let’s just say that I’m happy book two is now available!

Once again, I have to come to the conclusion that Jay Kristoff is an evil, but amazing author! I’m still on the fence about Amie Kaufman, because I haven’t read any books written by just her! At the moment I’m reading Aurora Burning and I have a feeling it’s going to hurt even more. Keep an eye on the blog for the review for the sequel! I’d love to hear your thoughts if you’ve read this book!
