It’s been quite a while since I did my first (and last) manga edition of the mini reviews, so I thought today would be a great day to another one. I have read a couple of manga since doing those reviews and I’m quite excited to talk about those! So without further ado, let’s get into it!
The Ancient Magus’ Bride vol. 1 – Kore Yamazaki
The Ancient Magus’ Bride is the opening to a fantasy series and follows Chise Hatori. Chise is an orphan and a slave and she gets sold to a magus at the start of the story. The synopsis doesn’t give you that much but I heard someone talk about this series very enthusiastically and was intrigued right away.
I got this volume for Christmas this past year and I’m happy I finally picked it up. The rest of the series is on my wishlist! There are currently 10 volumes out in English with the next one coming out this September.
This first volume mostly introduces the characters to us and shows us some of the world we’re in. Everything you see is very intriguing and makes you want more! I really enjoyed the world and I’m very curious about basically everything. The one thing I don’t really like is the fact that Chise is 15 and will be the Magus’ bride, the Magus who seems to be quite old. We don’t yet know why exactly the Magus bought Chise but I don’t think this is the best message to be put out in the world. Other than that I really liked the story, the characters and the world. Like I said, I will definitely be continuing this series.
The Promised Neverland 2 – Kaiu Shirai
I really liked the first volume of The Promised Neverland and after that reveal at the end I just had to read the next volume. We follow a couple of really smart kids who are being raised at an orphanage. They seem to be cared for really well, but we (and our MCs) found out that they’re raised for slaughter. Mom tells them they get picked by a family but they actually get fed to demons! This was such an OMG moment.
The second volume continues where we left the story. A couple of kids now know the secret and they plan on escaping. There is a kid spying for Mom, and they have to find out who it is. This second volume wasn’t as shocking as the first one but it was still enjoyable and thrilling. I really like this story and I can’t wait to continue it.
The characters are great and I enjoyed getting to know more of them in this volume. I really hate Sister Krone and hope the kids will beat her soon 😉 Ray was probably my favorite character in this volume. I can’t wait to find out what’s next for him!
Paradise Kiss vol. 1 – Ai Yazawa
This was one of the first manga I ever bought and I was excited to read it. Paradise Kiss follows Yukari, a ‘good girl’ who does as her parents tell her and studies hard so she can get into a good college. A couple of fashion school students ‘kidnap’ her to get her to model for them and some kind of relationship follows.
This is a very slow paced story for me, possibly because I didn’t really care about the story. After reading a couple of pages I put down the manga for months. But I did finally finish it! Unfortunately I didn’t really like it, and that is likely mostly due to the fact that this just isn’t the story for me. I also didn’t like any of the characters, most of them were so annoying. The ending almost made me want to pick up the next volume but ultimately this just isn’t the story for me and I won’t be continuing the series.
These are three of the manga I read, not all of them were as enjoyable. But I did discover a new series I will definitely be continuing. Have you read any of these manga? And what did you think of them? Let me know in the comments!
