TTT #73| Things That Make Me Pick Up a Book

We have been having fun with Top Ten Tuesday, so we decided we will do one every week. This bookish meme was hosted by The Broke and the Bookish, and has been going since June 2010! Since January 2018 Top Ten Tuesday is hosted by That Artsy Reader Girl.

This week’s topic is Things That Make Me Pick Up a Book. I don’t know if I will be able to think of ten, but let’s see how far I can get!

1. Cover I know… we’re not supposed to judge a book by its cover! Sometimes a cover just jumps out at you though. There have been quite a few books I’ve bought because of the cover alone. That can be disappointing, but sometimes it really works out. An example of a cover buy for me is City of Ghosts. I didn’t know what the book was about at first, but thought it looked stunning!

2. Sypnopsis The description/blurb of a book can also be very important. A few paragraphs is all we get when we want to know what a book is about. That can also really make or break a book! Sometimes the blurb makes you want to read the book right away.

3. Auto-buy authors If I love an author, I end up pciking up a book they right even without knowing what it’s about. Authors that have made this list: Cassandra Clare, Sarah J Maas, Jennifer L. Armentrout, Marissa Meyer, V.E. Schwab, Jay Kristoff, Amanda Bouchet and so many more!

4. Friends Recommend Books I have a really fun group of bookish friends and if they really enjoy a book or tell me that they think I will love something, there’s a big chance I will pick it up! They haven’t proved me wrong yet!

5. Facebook Book Groups I am a mod in the TBR & Beyond Book Club and since joining that group I have bought a lot of books, haha. There are monthly group reads and because of that I have picked up quite a few books I wouldn’t have picked up without them. They’ve gotten me out of my comfort zone many times and I have found amazing authors to keep an eye on! Here is the April schedule with our group reads!

6. Bloggers Reading reviews, Top Ten Tuesdays and other bookish posts has also made me buy books before. Not only when bloggers really love something, but also when they don’t love something. When they explain in their review why they love something or don’t (and that’s a reason I would love a book), I add them to my wishlist!

7. Bookstagram Same as with bloggers, seeing posts on Instagram about books has caused me to pick up quite a few books. Social media is a dangerous place for my wallet, haha.

I think I’m going to stick at seven things. I could add more, but then it would just be a reason that can easily be connected to the first seven that I have already talked about. What makes you pick up a book? Let me know in the comments and feel free to leave your own TTT link!

    1. Thank you 🙂 And that can be a good and bad thing if you’re easily influenced!

    1. Bloggers can definitely be spot on especially when we have the same tasts in books!

    1. I would be afraid to count how many books I’ve added to my TBR for those reasons, haha.

  1. Pretty much everyone I’ve visited so far today has mentioned covers as a reason why they pick up a book, I do it as well, don’t judge a book by it’s cover is a terrible mantra to go along with! I also had auto buy authors and blogger recommendations on my list.

    1. Yeah, cover seems to be one of the reasons I see the most on other blogs! It is the first thing we see before picking it up to read.

    1. Reading the first few paragraphs is actually a really good idea! I will have to see if that works for me 😀

  2. A pretty cover will get me to pick up a book, but a good blurb will make me actually want to read it. Friend recommendations are also good. Here is our Top Ten Tuesday

    1. Some blurbs just make you want to put everything down and start that one right away!

    1. I agree! I know from experience how long it can take and appreciate others for doing the same thing!

    1. Even if we don’t like the book in the end, it still looks pretty on our shelf 😉

  3. I’m right there with you on covers! Bloggers, bookstagram, and Facebook groups have become huge areas that help me find new books–usually more than I can read. Jay Kristoff is on my auto-buy author list as well. 🙂 Great list!

    1. I think it’s exciting to see how many people cover buy and open up about it! We shouldn’t be ashamed! I have discovered a lot of amazing books that way!

  4. I am a shameless cover judger haha First impressions really do matter! The cover catches my attention and the synopsis makes or breaks my decision 😀 Great list!

    1. The sypnopsis is definitely the deal breaker for me as well 😀

  5. Our lists are similar! Definitely agree with auto-buy authors and recommendations from friends. They can’t steer us wrong right!?

  6. Great list!

I don’t think I am influenced by covers, but maybe subconsciously. 🙂

And I have stayed away from Bookstagram even though one of the bloggers I follow joined it. It would be too much to keep track of, I guess, with the other social media I’m on. Maybe someday…

    1. Yes, we’re definitely influenced without realizing it! And I don’t use all social media either. It’s a lot!

  7. For me, it is 100% everything except 5 & 7 because I don’t really follow book accounts. But the rest is pretty much the order for me as well.
