We have been having fun with Top Ten Tuesday, so we decided we will do one every week. This bookish meme was hosted by The Broke and the Bookish, and has been going since June 2010! Since last January Top Ten Tuesday is hosted by That Artsy Reader Girl.
This week’s topic is Books I Meant to Read in 2018 But Didn’t. And there are A LOT of books I meant to read last year haha. Most of these are 2018 releases I think, and all are books I do already own. I have an insane amount of unread books and obviously I wish I had read all of them in 2018 but that was never going to happen. So these are all books I really planned on reading last year. Hopefully this is the year I will get to them!
1. Wildcard – Marie Lu
I really enjoyed Warcross last year and this is the conclusion to the duology. If I’m being honest, I only picked up Warcross because the naked hardback is gorgeous, I never expected to enjoy the story as much as I did. The Wildcard naked hardback is really pretty as well so I’m happy I own it. But I did see quite some mixed reviews for it and that hold me back from reading it right away. I do plan on reading it soon, it’s nice to finish a series and I wouldn’t want to forgot everything about the first book before picking up the sequel.
2. Spinning Silver – Naomi Novik
Uprooted is probably my favorite stand alone fantasy novels of all time. So when Spinning Silver was announced I got super excited. I still see Uprooted as a stand alone novel since Spinning Silver isn’t technically a sequel, it’s more of a companion novel. That being said, the synopsis sounds great and with how much I loved Uprooted, my hopes for this one are HIGH. I haven’t seen too many reviews, but the ones I did see were pretty positive.
3. The Caged Queen – Kristen Ciccarelli
I loved The Last Namsara last year and I loved meeting Kristen Ciccarelli. She is such a sweet human being and she deserves all the love. So obviously I pre ordered The Caged Queen, there was also an international pre order incentive which I appreciated so so much. There aren’t that many international pre order incentives so whenever there is one for a book I might like I usually try to get it. I was a tiny bit disappointed to learn this book will follow a different main character than the first book, but I still have pretty high hopes for this one.
4. Vengeful – V.E. Schwab
I’m so ashamed I haven’t read this one yet! Victoria is one of my favorite authors, I got this beautiful hardcover in a wonderful Illumicrate special edition box and I really liked Vicious. So what is wrong with me? Haha. I did start reading it and I really loved what I read so far. And the reviews I’ve seen were super positive! But I was in a bit of a slump when I received this one I think, and Kingdom of Ash came out soon after. So I just put it down for a second and then didn’t pick it back up. Oops.
5. What If It’s Us – Adam Silvera & Becky Albertalli
I really enjoyed Adam’s and Becky’s books so far so when they teamed up I knew I had to get their newest book right away. Contemporary isn’t my favorite genre but I do like to read it every now and then, especially when it seems like a cute and fluffy one. Unfortunately I’ve read so many negative reviews for this one lately, and if I didn’t already own it I probably wouldn’t have picked it up at all haha. Since I do own, I hope to read it semi soon and find out for myself where I stand with this one.
6. Any Brandon Sanderson novel
I have quite the Brandon Sanderson collection if I say so myself. Currently I own 9 of his books and I have only read the Reckoners YA trilogy. Which I did enjoy a lot! But I have been wanting to read his other books for quite a while and have been planning to pick them up all year. Unfortunately I never did. Warbreaker might be the one I want to pick up first, although I know Candyce is planning on reading Mistborn this summer and if I still haven’t picked up any other Brandon Sanderson book I think I will join her!
7. The Defiant – Lesley Livingston
I read The Valiant as soon as it released in 2017. That was when Lesley visited the Netherlands as well, so both Candyce and I got to meet her, and that was a lot of fun. I also really enjoyed The Valiant, I like reading Historical Fiction and would love to read more of it. So when you ask me why I haven’t read The Defiant yet, I’m not sure haha. BUT, Candyce, Melissa and I are doing a buddyread in February for this one so I will be able to cross this one off the list soon!
8. Unearthed – Amie Kaufman & Meagan Spooner
The synopsis for this one sounds like something I would highly enjoy! So I was really looking forward for my order to come in and jump right into this story. But whenever I order multiple books…. Somehow I don’t read any haha. And since then this book has been looking at me and judging me. I’ve heard some mixed things in reviews but from what I can gather this still sounds like something I would really enjoy. The sequel came out this month I believe so it’s perfect timing to pick it up now and continue with the next one right away.
9. King’s Cage – Victoria Aveyard
I have been planning on reading this one for 2 years probably. Red Queen was such an enjoyable and addictive read for me. After I finished it I saw a lot of negative reviews but I just loved it. Glass Sword however, was a really big let down. The story was boring after the first couple of really cool chapters and the characters were whining all book long. So this made me pretty hesitant towards King’s Cage. I have gotten War Storm for Christmas this year because I know no matter how I feel about King’s Cage, I will want to finish the series anyways haha. So I plan on doing so this year!
10. The Hate U Give – Angie Thomas
Everyone loves this book and it’s extremely important message so obviously I had to get this one as well. I was planning on reading it as soon as I got it, but I bought it on one of my trips to America and I always come back with a really big stack of books haha. And like I said, whenever I get multiple books at once…. The movie came out in 2018 and that was why I really planned on finally reading it in 2018. Hopefully this is the year I can read it and watch the movie!
So these were 10 of the books I planned on reading in 2018 but didn’t. Have you read any of them? And what did you think? Let me know in the comments!
Great list! I meant to read The Hate U Give this year too — because I wanted to read it before seeing the film! The Defiant also looks like a good read — I’ll put it on my list! Love the cover.

I haven’t seen the film based on The Hate U Give yet, but the book was really good. Happy reading!
This is my Top Ten Tuesday post.
Vengeful is on my TBR as well. I can’t wait to get a copy of it!
Here is our Top Ten Tuesday. Thank you!
Uprooted is one of my favorite books of all time! I loved it. And I agree it is still a Standalone because Spinning Silver definitely is not a sequel! Unfortunately I didn’t like Spinning Silver, but I am in the minority there. I hope you enjoy it! (tho maybe if you go in with slightly lower expectations you will have better luck 😉

I am so frigging excited about the Defiant! Can’t wait for our re-read to start! Unearthed is still on my tbr as well. I started reading it right after its release last year but never finished it – epic fail. I loved these authors previous SciFi trilogy so I really want to start reading this one again soon.
I can’t seem to get on with the red queen series either, lol. I haven’t even finished book 2 because it was such a letdown to me back then. But I’ve heard it gets better towards the end and since I really loved the first book, I want to give the series another go and start re-reading it this year and then hopefully finish the series.
Hope you get around to reading all the books and that you’ll enjoy them!

The ending of Glass Sword definitely got me excited for King’s Cage. That series has serious priority for me this year haha.
I just heard that Unearthed will only be a duology, so with the second book out now I really hope to pick it up soon 😀
I haven’t read anything by VE Schwab yet, but I keep buying her books when they go on sale, so I mean to someday!
