Looking Back at Our Bookhauls| December 2017

We decided to add a monthly post to the blog. As you know, we show you the books we bought or received every month. This got us thinking, how many books have we actually already read from our hauls? So now once a month we will be looking back at our bookhauls from a year ago and tell you what we have read!

If we haven’t read many of them, hopefully this will motivate us a bit more to read more of the books we already own, haha. So this month we will talk about our bookhaul in December 2017.

Candyce

This is actually a bookhaul I’m really afraid to look at, haha. December is always a book filled month. Books are really the only thing I add to my wishlist, so that’s all I get. It’s a really good thing that I’m working on my backlist this year, because I didn’t read many of the books I received last December… Oops?

Updrift & Breakwater – Errin Stevens

Okay, I’m actually embarassed I haven’t read these yet. I need to priortize these in February! The author was kind enough to send them all the way here. The least I can do is review them. Updrift and Breakwater both sound really good, so I know what I need to read next month!

Wonder – R.J. Palacio

This was a book I received during Sinterkerst last year. I haven’t read the book or seen the movie, so I haven’t gotten very far, haha.

A Gentleman’s Guide to Vice and Virtue – Mackenzi Lee

Another one I still haven’t took the time to read yet! I received the companion novel this Christmas, so hopefully at the end of the year I can say I’ve read both!

Prism – Nina Walker

Prism is a book I keep hearing good things about, but yet again haven’t gotten around to reading. I saw on Goodreads that the third one came out last year, so I need to get going. The second book hasn’t been added to my collection yet and with how I’m doing with this haul, that may be a good thing!

All Broke Down, All Lined Up & All Played Out – Cora Carmack

Out of all the books on this list so far, I’m most shocked that I haven’t read these yet. I’m a huge fan of sports romances and actually read quite a few in 2018! They aren’t that big, so it shouldn’t take long to read.

Most of All You – Mia Sheridan

This post is getting rather boring, because all I keep saying is that I haven’t read a book yet. Unfortunately, Most of All You is another one I haven’t been able to read yet!

Wish You Were Here & Swear on This Life – Renée Carlino

Even though I didn’t read these two last year, I did read a new release, Blind Kiss. While it was a very frustrating story at times, it made me want more by this author. At least I can read two of her books this year!

One of Us is Lying – Karen M. McManus

Finally a book I can say that I read last year! I loved trying to figure out who was behind the death of the student in the beginning. Unfortunately, I was actually disappointed at the end. I’m hoping her new book will be better!

Outlander – Diana Gabaldon

Outlander is definitely a series I want to give a try, but I think it’s something I really need to be in the mood for. I guess the size is rather intimidating as well, but when I do start bigger books, I’m normally happy that I did! So we’ll see what 2019 brings!

A Shadow Bright and Burning – Jessica Cluess

I received the sequel for Christmas in 2018, so I can at least continue with the second book if the first one amazes me. A few of my friends have read these books and were really positive, so I think I’m going to enjoy them as well.

Nyxia – Scott Reintgen

Reading works in mysterious ways I guess. I was so excited when I got this book last year, but if you ask me why I haven’t read it yet, I can’t give you an answer! There are too many books published every year, haha. The sequel to this is already out I believe, so it’s another series I need to start.

The Unexpected Everything – Morgan Matson

Since You’ve Been Gone was a really good book and I enjoyed this author’s writing. I know Isabelle owns this one as well, so we need to plan a buddyread soon!

Fire Blood – Elly Blake

I still love the covers of these books! If the cover is just as pretty as the actual story is still something I need to find out!

The Speaker – Traci Chee

Another case of me receiving the next book of before reading this one. The Storyteller was one of my Christmas gifts in 2018. To be honest, this is one I actually decided to wait to read. I think it’s very special and want to read two and three back to back!

Renegades – Marissa Meyer

I may have not read this book yet, but my copy of Renegades has been signed! I met the author last year and that was such a fun experience.

Crystal Storm – Morgan Rhodes

Crystal Storm is one of the last books of this series that I haven’t started yet. Falling Kingdoms has gotten some mixed reviews and I think that’s made me hesitant. It seems it gets better after the first book, so I will have to give it a go!

Heartless – Marissa Meyer

At least I can end on a positive note! Heartless is a book I read awhile ago. I only had the e-book, so last year Isabelle added her extra copy in my Christmas box. It’s such a pretty book, so I’m glad I got to add it to my collection!

End Result:

Read: 2/21 – 9.5%
TBR: 19/21 – 90.5%

Isabelle

I got quite the stack of books in December! With Christmas, Secret Santa and Candyce’s surprise box I always end up with a good amount of new books. And unfortunately that doesn’t stop me from buying some more either haha. Let’s see how many I ended up reading!

I Hate Fairyland vol. 3 – Skottie Young

This is one I read! I even think I read it as soon as I got it. Last month I got the last book in this series and that makes it the first graphic novel series I ever finished. I really enjoy these and I’m happy I read them.

Papergirls vol. 1 – Brian K. Vaughan

I’m pretty good with my graphic novels, I also read this one. This was so different from what I was expecting but I did enjoy it.

Betty & Veronica – Adam Hughes

This was my 100th and last book of 2017! So another one read 🙂 I hope to pick up some more Archie-verse comics soon.

Sailor Moon 1 – Naoko Takeuchi

And another one read, I’m off to a good start! This was very enjoyable and I need to continue with this series.

Mistborn trilogy – Brandon Sanderson

I haven’t picked these up yet BUT I do plan on starting these this year. Brandon Sanderson keeps on writing books I want to read and I need to get on that haha.

Warbreaker – Brandon Sanderson

I haven’t read this one either but it might be the first Brandon Sanderson book I want to pick up this year.

Gemina – Amie Kaufman & Jay Kristoff

Yay, I did read and loved this one. This is my favorite book in the series actually. I’m excited for the new series Amie and Jay are starting!

Furthermore – Tahereh Mafi

Oops, haven’t read this one yet. I’m not sure if I said it last month or if I was just thinking it but I might do a Middle Grade month this year to get caught up on all my unread MG books haha.

Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban (illustrated edition) – J.K. Rowling

I haven’t technically read this, but it’s more of a collectors edition for me so I’m okay with that. So far the first 3 books are out and I will at some point read them like this but I’m just very careful with them haha.

Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone (Ravenclaw edition) – J.K. Rowling

This is another collectors edition. I did read the extra Ravenclaw information that’s in here but other than that it’s for display purpose only haha.

The Long Way to a Small Angry Planet – Becky Chambers

I did read this one this year and I really enjoyed it. You can tell there has been so much thought and creativity put into this universe and I loved exploring it. It was a bit of a slower paced read but the characters were wonderful to read about.

A Closed and Common Orbit – Becky Chambers

This is the sequel to The Long Way to a Small Angry Planet but I didn’t realize that it follows different chapters. I was a bit disappointed by that so I haven’t read it yet haha.

Ink and Bone – Rachel Caine

One of the books Candyce gifted me last year! And I was so excited about it… But I haven’t read it yet. I do also own the sequel so I can read them back to back.

Sleeping Giants – Sylvain Neuvel

This was the other book Candyce gifted me and another one I haven’t read haha. I feel pretty bad about this because I was super excited when I got them haha.

The Hobbit – J.R.R. Tolkien

More to feel bad about haha. Our friend Adinda gave this one to me and I have yet to pick it up. I do really want to read it, it’s such a classic.

Thief’s Cunning – Sarah Ahiers

I read the first book about 2 years ago and this was another one Adinda gifted me since she had two copies. The first book was enjoyable and I think this second one will be pretty quick read, so hopefully I will pick it up soon.

Windwitch – Susan Dennard

We’re ending on a positive note luckily! I read and loved this one and I can’t wait for the sequel to come out next month. This is a wonderful series and I’m so excited to continue reading about these characters.

Everless – Sara Holland

I read this right before meeting Sara and got my copy signed. She was so nice and I loved meeting her. I was also pleasantly surprised by the book and will read the second book.

End result
Read: 8/20 – 40%
Unread: 10/20 – 50%
Collector’s edition: 2/20 – 10%

December is definitely one of our bigger haul posts! Do you keep track of how much of your hauls you read? Let us know in the comments!

  1. Ohh this is a really great article idea!!!
But it’ll be too confronting maybe hahahaha.

    @candyce:
O, I really like the cover of Breakwater btw. Matches the first one so well! I have Updrift on my shelves as well. Unread… lol
I’m really curious to find out what you’ll think of Prism!!
I’ve read an arc of the book back before its release and I loved it a lot!
The Gentlemen’s guide to vice and virtue is on my tbr atm.
I’m quite jealous of your Cora Carmack collection haha! This series has been on my wishlist for quite a while now. I really need to get around to buy them sometime. And Most of all you by Mia Sheridan is sooooo beautiful!! Everything I’ve read by her has been nothing short of amazing so far.
And you have Nyxia; awesome! I’m really curious about that one!
And oormg hahahahah you really need to get around to reading them all, lol. Not that I’m one who should say anything haha I’m probably exactly the same if I’d look back to my December ’17 haul, lol.

    @Isa:
I’m really curious to see what you’ll think of Warbreaker by Sanderson. I haven’t bought it yet but it looks the most interesting to me as well. Although, Skyward is on my shelf right now which is one I’m reaaaaally excited about as well! And what I’ve read of mist born has been really awesome so far too. And omg you need to read GEMINA ASAAAAP!
Sleeping Giants is on my tbr as well! Really curious about it. Thief’s cunning is one I still need to read too. Really liked the first book and curious to see how it all continues almost 20years later with new main characters. You did a lot better than Candyce I see, lol!

    1. Haha Gemina is one of the books I DID read 😀 And I loved it! So many great books on my TBR, I wish I could just read all year and not worry about anything else haha
