October is a month for spooky, supernatural or creepy books. As you know Candyce and I both participated in a Spook-a-thon, and for one of the challenges I read Contagion by Erin Bowman. I was already interested in this story when reading the synopsis a while ago, but when a friend told us how amazing the audiobook was I knew I had to pick it up. Since it was available as audiobook, I decided to go that route. So let’s take a look to see if I liked this one!It got in us
After receiving an urgent SOS from a work detail on a distant planet, a skeleton crew is dispatched to perform a standard search-and-rescue mission.
Most are dead.
But when the crew arrives, they find an abandoned site, littered with rotten food, discarded weapons…and dead bodies.
Don’t set foot here again.
As they try to piece together who—or what—could have decimated an entire operation, they discover that some things are best left buried—and some monsters are only too ready to awaken.
I think this is a really cool cover that fits the story so so well! You don’t realize it when looking at it at first but this cover is pretty clever. I also like the colors and think this is an attractive cover for sure.
It got in us and most are dead. Decklan flew for help. Don’t trust the kid.
I liked that Contagion is a mix between the sci-fi and the thriller genre. This might be getting more popular in YA lit and I’m quite happy with that. I love a good thriller and when it’s set in space, that gives it something extra I really enjoy. The plot for this story is decent enough. I wouldn’t say it’s super unique but it had some good plot twists and I’m a sucker for those. Surprise me and I will likely be a fan of the book. And that happened in this case as well. The space crew arrives and you just don’t know what happened in that place. Contagion also had an extra layer, between a couple of chapters you had a couple of sentences from someone looking at the things happening there. And you just wasn’t sure who that was and what they were hiding. That made it definitely extra interesting. Together with the plot twists is that the reason I enjoyed the book so much. It is also a very fast-paced book so you fly through it!
Follow the bloody footprints, they said. What could go wrong, they said.
This is a harder one today! We get to meet quite some characters early on. Contagion isn’t about character development and don’t expect any. This story is about the suspense of what is going on on that planet and the survival of the crew. I did like the characters and their diversity. But if I’m being honest, I don’t remember them that well anymore. And I think that shows that Contagion isn’t really about the characters and definitely not about their development. However, I was rooting for the crew to all get out alive.
In the end I decided to give Contagion 4 out of 5 stars. I loved the plot twists and the ending really left me wanting more. The characters were likable but not memorable. Excited for the next book!
Have you read Contagion? Or any other Erin Bowman book? Let me know in the comments!
