TTT #33 | Series I Don’t Plan to Finish

We have been having fun with Top Ten Tuesday, so we decided we will do one every week. This bookish meme was hosted by The Broke and the Bookish, and has been going since June 2010! Since last January Top Ten Tuesday is hosted by That Artsy Reader Girl.

This week’s Top Ten Tuesday is Series I Have Given Up On or Don’t Plan To Finish. I decided to go for series I don’t plan to finish even though I have a really hard time actually saying I’m not continuing with something. When I started compiling this list, I didn’t expect to actually find 10 series, but I did! I even had to make a selection haha. To hopefully get some discussion going I decided to pick some of the most popular series I don’t plan to finish.

1.Vampire Academy – Richelle Mead

# of books in series: 6

I picked this first book up after seeing the movie, and contrary to most people I actually enjoyed the movie. So I was hopeful for the book and possibly finding an amazing series to read. Unfortunately the book didn’t really do anything for me, I never picked up the second one and now I simply lost all interest.

2.The 100 – Kass Morgan

# of books in series: 4

So, you guys may know how much I LOVE LOVE LOVE the tv show The 100. As soon as I saw it was based on books, I had to read them and I did. Too bad for me, the tv show is quite different from the books, and those deviations are pretty crucial to me! I did struggle my way through the books, as I said I don’t like not finishing series. Even revisiting all these has me questioning if I shouldn’t just pick them back up. I was pretty content with finishing the series, and then a fourth book was announced! Why?!?!?! I just can’t do it, I won’t pick up that last book and just stick to the tv show.

3. Matched – Ally Condie
# of books read: 1
# of books in series: 3

The premise of this series is so interesting and really sucked me in. I found this series on a blog comparing books to the Hunger Games, and I needed books to help with that craving. So, this was one of the books I picked up. It took me a while to finish this book and while I did start the second book I never got passed the first couple of chapters. Might still be stuck in chapter 2 come to think of it. The idea is still interesting but the execution didn’t really excite me. I do absolutely adore these covers though.

4. Legend – Marie Lu
# of books read: 2
# of books in series: 3

This is a hard one! I only need to read one more book to finish this series. And I kinda feel bad for not finishing it, as I love Marie’s Warcross and am definitely interested in reading her other series. However, this one wasn’t that special to me, maybe I had enough of this kind of storyline by that point. Still, after all this time I don’t really recall any detail from the second book so reading the last one might not even make sense at this point.

5. Miss Peregrine’s Peculiar Children – Ransom Riggs
# of books read: 1
# of books in series: 6?

Ugh, another one where the premise really interested me! And I do own the original trilogy. Although they’re currently sitting on my unhaul pile haha. I loved the old creepy pictures in the book but didn’t care for the story at all. While I was possibly thinking of just pushing through book 2&3, after the second trilogy was announced I just knew I had to leave this one behind. There is no way I’m making my way through 5 more books I don’t really care about.

6. Talon – Julie Kagawa
# of books read: 1
# of books in series: 5

I absolutely loved the synopsis for this one! Dragons that change to human forms and hide in plain sight? Doesn’t that sound so cool? Unfortunately the dragon part seemed less important than the love triangle in this story and that was simply not what I picked this book up for. There was also a lot more time being spend on them being in human form than in dragon form (which I obviously would have preferred). I don’t want to read 4 more books about this, although I do suspect the focus might shift in the other books.

7. Delirium – Lauren Oliver
# of books read: 1
# of books in series: 3

I wasn’t to sure about this book to begin with, but I got my hands on a cheap and beautiful edition so I figured I would give it a go. This was a buddy read I believe and I possibly still wouldn’t have picked it up other wise. Surprisingly  I gave this book 4 stars but right away I knew I had no interest in picking up the rest of the series.

8. White Rabbit Chronicles – Gena Showalter
# of books read: 1
# of books in series: 4

I feel a little bit bad about this one, I own the first 3 books and the first one is signed by the author. However, going in I had expectations about this story. And after reading a bit, I realized I hadn’t read the synopsis. I was hoping for Alice to go the ‘Wonderland’ and find it infested with zombies. What I got was an Alice in our time/world with zombies out at night. Such a different story! I also didn’t like the love interest. So it’s currently sitting on my unhaul pile with the Miss Peregrine’s books, but the fact that it’s personally signed has me questioning what to do.

9. Everlife – Gena Showalter
# of books read: 1
# of books in series: 3

Look at that stunning cover! I really wanted to love this story. The synopsis sounded super interesting and one of my friends loved it. Meanwhile, I did not like it at all. I didn’t really like the characters, the story wasn’t really what I expected from it and the emotional ending everyone talked about? It didn’t do anything for me. So, very sadly, I’ll not finish this series.

10. The Cage – Megan Sheperd
# of books read: 1
# of books in series: 3

And lastly, the cage series. This one had been on my want-to-read shelf on Goodreads for so long. When Megan came to the Netherlands I decided it was time to pick it up. Unfortunately this one also fell short for me. I once again liked the premise but didn’t really like the execution. The love interest/story line was also pretty creepy and I couldn’t get behind it. Super annoying characters and just a big no from me.

Did you read (and like) any of these series? Please let me know in the comments! I might still be swayed to reconsider haha.

    1. It’s so sad when the ending of a series is so disappointing! After all that time you invested you really hope for a great ending. I do think endings are quite hard but an extreme disappointment is really sad. 😔

  1. Oh my gosh, we share 3 – 3!!!
I felt the same about The Cage, Delirium and Firstlife, and also Alice in Zombieland – after the second book I just gave up but didn’t think to put it on this list!

    1. Haha good to hear!! I love Gena’s ideas but the execution is just not for me

  2. Both the Matched series and Miss Peregrine’s Peculiar Children made my list this week too! I managed to read the first two books in Matched, but the second was just not as good as the first (and if it took you ages to get through the first book, you might just need to give up for good!). Miss Peregrine’s was ALL over the internet when it first came out and I expected so much from it. Honestly, the photos seemed more interesting than the plot itself.

    1. Totally agree on Miss Peregrine’s, the photos were really cool, the plot not so much.
That sounds like giving up on Matched was the right move for me

  3. I won’t be continuing with Delirium, either. I didn’t like it quite as much as you. It didn’t grab me.

  4. I stopped in the Peregrine series after the first book as well. The plot wasn’t for me, and also I’m not a fan of the old character who is actually a child trope. I did like the pictures too though, they were so neat!

    1. Yes I really loved the photos! They’re the reason I did buy the second & third book but I just can’t get myself to pick them back up

  5. I love Julie Kagawa and her books, but I agree entirely – the dragon part took less priority and I was there for the DRAGONS. Not the romance.

I don’t plan on picking up Delirium either… At least the rest of the series. I only picked it up for book club, but I hated it for some reason. (Didnt help the Hulu version was horrible.)

    1. Exactly, the dragon part was why I picked it up! I usually only like romance as a side plot, not the main focus.
So good to hear I’m not alone in not picking up the rest of these series

  6. Legend is one of my favorite book series! I’ve written about 400 pages of fanfiction based on the series, LOL. Once I was visiting my parents for Christmas and had left Legend at home, but I decided I wanted to read it, so I bought a copy in Spanish for my Kindle so I could read it without buying something I already had!

But we all have different preferences.

I haven’t read any of the other series.

    1. I love that you love it so much! Yes we all have different preferences luckily. Would be a boring world other wise 😉

  7. I’m glad you left Matched and Delirium! I hated them. I used to not be able to leave series unfinished and had read these then. So I finished it all and I hated it.

I’m sad you didn’t like Legend, though! They’re one of my favourite trilogies because I liked all three books, which is rare for me.
