Review| Moonlight Sins – Jennifer L. Armentrout

Jennifer L. Armentrout is one of my favorite authors and I have read most of her books! I am slowly getting to her older books that were published before I became a fan. Next week, Moonlight Seduction will be released, the second book in the de Vincent trilogy. This made is seem like the perfect time to post the review of the first book, Moonlight Sins, today.

New York Times bestselling author Jennifer L. Armentrout delivers the unforgettable story of a woman whose new life has just begun—but may end in murder…

Julia Hughes has always played it safe until she learned a very painful lesson. Now Julia’s starting over with a job in the Louisiana bayou—and a scorching encounter with a stranger, only to discover he’s Lucian de Vincent… her new employer. The de Vincent brothers share a massive fortune and a dark reputation. Julia cares for their troubled sister, but a menacing presence in the mansion—and the ever-present temptation of Lucian—prove dangerously distracting.

Lucian’s grandmother claimed de Vincent men fall in love once—and hard. Apparently, it’s Lucian’s turn. Julia’s compassionate care of his twin makes Lucian want to lay himself bare. But some secrets are better for Julia not to know.

The recent “suicide” of Lucian’s father is the latest in a string of deaths on the estate. Someone is eliminating the de Vincents. And the best way to get to Lucian may be through Julia…

Cover

This cover is pretty dark and mysterious, just how the book is supposed to be I guess. I do love that the whol cover is black and white except for the title. It does pop out at you that way.

Plot

Moonlight Sins isn’t the type of book I expected from this author. All of the elements I need in a book are there, but it felt a bit flat for me. I enjoyed reading it though, but I wasn’t impressed like I normally am with this author. I loved the characters, family history and even the mysterious events going on. There was something missing though. Maybe I didn’t connect with the characters enough, because of lack of information. Or the worldbuilding needed more. It could’ve even been the need to know more about the circumstances surrounding the father’s death. I had a really hard time rating this one, because it was lacking something I’m used to from this author. It was good enough for me to want to continue, but definitely not this author’s best work.

Characters

Julia is a careful woman who has always chose the safe options in her life. When her marriage ended and wasn’t what she expected, she decided she needed a change. Julia took a risk by moving to a different part of the country and starting all over again. She didn’t expect to find what she did working for the de Vincents, but she was determined to do a good job. At first Julia is once again one to stick to the rules and do her work and nothing more, but that is until she can’t stop thinking about Lucian. There is definitely something mysterious about this man and family, but she doesn’t know what. Julia becomes a strong woman in this book by learning to speak her mind and fight for what she believes in! She also starts learning to open herself for love again and fighting when things get difficult.

Lucian’s family isn’t your typical one and he’s never really felt like he belonged. His family history isn’t the happiest one, they say all females are cursed. Even his mother didn’t seem to escape that. When his father dies, he’s not even sure how to be sad. Lucian’s onl concern is his sister, who has come back after missing for over ten years. All that matters to him is that she gets better. I love how protective he is of his family and that he will spend as much as he needs to make things right. Lucian is more insecure than he leads on and it’s amazing to see how much Julia opens him up to love. He knows their relationship shouldn’t be, but just can’t let her go.

Even though this book wasn’t what I expected, I really want to know more about this family and the other brothers. I was lucky to get an ARC of Moonlight Seduction, so keep an eye out for my review of that next week. Have any of you read Moonlight Sins? What did you think?
