Blog Tour| Suitors and Sabotage – Cindy Anstey

After reading My Lady Jane at the beginning of this year, I have been wanting to read more historical fiction. Seeing the sign up for this book, I saw it as a sign to read more. I have seen this book mentioned a few times online and so far I have loved most of the books I have read from Swoon Reads. If you want to know if I enjoyed Suitors and Sabotage just as much, keep on reading.

Synopsis:

Two young people must hide their true feelings for each other while figuring out who means them harm in this cheeky Regency romance from the author of Love, Lies and Spies and Duels & Deception.

Shy aspiring artist Imogene Chively has just had a successful Season in London, complete with a suitor of her father’s approval. Imogene is ambivalent about the young gentleman until he comes to visit her at the Chively estate with his younger brother in tow. When her interest is piqued, however, it is for the wrong brother.

Charming Ben Steeple has a secret: despite being an architectural apprentice, he has no drawing aptitude. When Imogene offers to teach him, Ben is soon smitten by the young lady he considers his brother’s intended.

But hiding their true feelings becomes the least of their problems when, after a series of “accidents,” it becomes apparent that someone means Ben harm. And as their affection for each other grows—despite their efforts to remain just friends—so does the danger. . .

In Suitors and Sabotage, author Cindy Anstey delivers another witty young adult historical fiction novel that is the perfect mix of sweetly romantic and action-packed.

Review
Cover I love the style of this cover and it fits perfectly with the time this book takes place in. The colors are good together and I have to say this cover would definitely make me want to pick up the book and see what it’s about.
Plot This was a cute and fun story. While I’m normally not a big fan of love triangles, I enjoyed this one. The author was great at describing the surroundings and it made me wish I could be there in the 1800s. To start everything off I loved the chapter titles and the humor this book. The writing style was pleasant. The only thing that bugged me was the switch of POV. It wasn’t smooth for me, but it could just also be the format of my ARC. Besides the love triangle, I loved the mystery element. A lot of unpleasant things were happening and it was fun trying to figure who the culprit was. It kept me guessing and I didn’t figure out who it was before the big reveal. This is only my second historical fiction and this one left me wanting more. Hopefully we will eventually get books about some of the other characters like Emily and Ernest.
Characters Imogene is a character ahead of her time. Even though she just had her season in London, she is more interested in her art and continuing with that than getting married. She is still young and though her parents expect this of her, she just isn’t sure. She is kind and has a good heart. It is fun to see her help others and how much she cares when bad things start happening to Ben. In the end she follows her heart and I think that was very brave, because her father wasn’t very accepting of that.
Ben is the outgoing one of the brothers and while pursuing his dream, he has hid a road block. He can’t draw. Admitting this in those days and asking the help of a woman is not very common. Developing unexpected feelings for the girl his brother is trying to court wasn’t something he saw coming. He is a good brother though. He doesn’t act upon his feelings and tries to keep his distance. Even when weird things start happening he doesn’t stay away. Ben is a brave and considering person and deserves to live his dream.
Emily is a wonderful best friend. She is always there for Imogene and is excited for her and what is happening. She is very kind. Emily gets a bit carried away when the boys join them. I think she just gets caught up in the idea of getting married. I would love for her to get her own book.
Ernest is a quiet one. He seems really sweet. Ernest wants Imogene to care for him and he really comes to care for her. He isn’t as outgoing as his brother. He much rather curl up with a book and I can totally understand that, haha. I would’ve loved to have parts from his POV. We didn’t really see enough of him in this book.
Jake and Percy were the comical duo of this book. I think Percy did this for Jake to try and cheer him up after losing his mother. They were fun!
Imogene’s parents were too serious. I get that they were stuck in their ads for that time in history, but Emily’s parents were kind and understanding.

I enjoyed this book and the time it took place in. If you don’t like love triangles this isn’t the book for you though. I loved that there was a little bit of mystery combined in this story as well. I think I definitely want to read her other books.
