December Wrap Up

The last month of the year is over and it’s time to see how we did with reading this month. We were both doing really good the last few months! Were we able to keep that up during the busy holiday month?

Candyce

This month started off really slow for me reading wise. I could tell that it was December and I was busy with other things. I still managed to read 10 books and 1 novella. This brings my total books read this year to 150. This is the first time I have ever read this much and I am very surprised, haha. This month I read only 2 physical books.

My New Crush Gave to Me – Shani Petroff

This was such a cute Christmas book! It had all the factors a good Christmas read should have. The review is already online and can be found here.

The Heart of Betrayal – Mary E. Pearson

I read The Kiss of Deception over a year ago and have been wanting to continue this trilogy for awhile. It’s a book Isabelle and I were going to buddyread and when a couple of friends decided to read it together, we decided to go along for the ride, haha. This was an amazing story and I am mad that I waited so long to continue, haha. I probably won’t be able to get to the last book in January, but definitely soon! Our review will be posted in the near future. I’m waiting for Isabelle to finish up.

Home for Christmas – Daphne James Huff, M.F. Lorson & Kayla Tirrell

This book has three short Christmas stories and they’re the kind that make you all warm inside. As I’ve said before I love these kind of stories this time of the year. As I say in my review, my only complaint was that the stories were too short!

Atlantis: The King’s Return – D.K. Combs

A friend of ours, Melissa, is a major fan of this book and in one of her fangirling moments she got me to read this, haha. It didn’t disappoint! This book was so interesting and I loved the world it takes place in. A very unique take on mermaids. The review will be posted in the near future. I have been really bad with writing reviews this month, so expect a lot in January!

One Night to Fall – Kelsey Kingsley

This was a sweet and fast read. I loved the author note in the beginning, letting the readers know that she wasn’t even planning on writing this book. The characters just wouldn’t leave her alone. Most of this story takes place during the span of one night, but with the flashbacks included you can really bond with the characters. A story of kids who grew up and fell in love, but lost eachother. They manage to find the other again, but will they work it out? Once again, another review that will follow soon.

The Edge of Juniper – Lora Richardson

Contemporary is normally a genre I read a lot in the summer, but I have been reading quite a lot of them lately. This story took on some serious subjects. Not something I have seen a lot of in this genre. Well not like this anyways. I really enjoyed this book and will be reading the second one next month!

The Unveiling of Brielle Davis – Nissa Leder

Brielle goes to camp after losing her twin sister a few months ago. Besides that she has been hearing and seeing things that she’s not sure are actually there. Even though this book has a supernatural element, it focuses a lot on her grieving and trying to deal with her sister’s death. I thought this was a very moving book. The supernatural part of the story could’ve been explore a bit more, but I have a feeling that will happen in the next book.

Lessons in Corruption – Giana Darling

This book is about a student/teacher relationship and was quite different than I thought. Cressida is only 26, but has been married since she was 18. It wasn’t a marriage she chose for herself, but was basically force by her parents. She’s always wanted to be a good person, but when she finally dares to divorce her husband her life changes. She meets King and gets the unpleasant surprise that he is one of her students. The fact that his father is the head of the MC in town makes things even more interesting. I enjoyed some elements of the story, but some weren’t my cup of tea.

The Afterlife of Holly Chase – Cynthia Hand

This is actually a retelling of A Christmas Carol and really original. I really enjoyed it and this is another book you should read during the holidays. Our review came on last weekend and can be found here.

The Young Queens – Kendare Blake

This is the first novella to come out for this series and I have been waiting for it since finishing One Dark Throne. The Young Queens gives us a look in their younger lives and what happened when they were seperated. I really enjoyed this and it has me wondering how things are going to go. I have some theories and can’t wait to see if they come true.

Salt – Pauline Creeden

I had something with mermaids this month, because this was the second book that involved mermaids that I read. I liked this take on them though. If they stayed out of the water during a full moon, they could stay on land for a month. At the end of the month they choose to either stay on land or go back to the sea. Verona’s choice is made for her when she saves Logan during a storm. Not having the best relationship with her family in the sea, being with Logan’s opens her eyes to what she can have. Mama Wend is the best grandmother I have read in a book and I would’ve loved to be around a character like that, haha. Of course her being on land brings some complications and the question rises if she will go back to sea with the next full moon.

Next month will be full of reviews. The business of the holidays has gotten me behind with them!

Isabelle

I DID IT!!! I READ A 100 BOOKS THIS YEAR, AAAAAH I’M SO EXCITED!!

Okay, now that is out of the way, let’s take a look at my December reads haha. After my amazing November reading month I felt like I might be able to read a 100 books this year, I needed to read 12 books which was quite the challenge. I ended up making this happen with 3 novellas, 3 graphic novels, 2 ebooks, a Harry Potter reread, and 3 physical books.

Queen Song and Steel Scars – Victoria Aveyard

These are two novellas that go with the Red Queen series. It’s been quite a while since I’ve read Red Queen and Glass Sword but after reading these novellas I really want to get on and read King’s Cage. I enjoyed both novellas but I think I enjoyed Queen Song the most. This one is about Queen Coriane and actually got quite emotional without a lot happening. Steel Scars had some more action to it and it was fun reading some scenes from a different POV.

The Young Queens – Kendare Blake

Another novella, this one is a Three Dark Crowns novella. It shows us the Queens right before they are separated, right after, and a couple of years after. I loved reading this so much and I can’t wait for the Oracle Queen novella. It was great being back in this world but I also enjoyed seeing more of the Queens background and gaining more understanding.

I Hate Fairyland Vol 3 – Skottie Young

I absolutely loved I Hate Fairyland vol 1 & 2 and was super happy I got vol 3 for Christmas. I actually read it the same day haha. It was another funny graphic novel full blood and gore and great art. Would recommend this series to every one!

Paper Girls vol 1 – Brian K. Vaughan

I love the Saga series by Brian K. Vaughan and had been interested in Paper Girls for a while. This was another one I got for Christmas and read the next day. I realised I didn’t really know what this one was about but I definitely enjoyed it and will continue the series.

Betty & Veronica – Adam Hughes

I really wanted to read 100 books so I got myself another graphic novel on December the 30th haha. Riverdale is one of my favourite tv shows and I’m slowly getting all the new Riverdale-verse comics so I was quite happy to find this one. I think this is my least favourite yet but it was still really enjoyable and I love being in Riverdale.

The Afterlife of Holly Chase – Cynthia Hand

Our buddyread of the month and a Christmas book at that. You can find our review here. It was an enjoyable read with a surprising twist at the end. Definitely recommend this one as a Christmas read next year!

The Ersatz Elevator – Lemony Snicket

Because of the Netflix show I started the Series of Unfortunate Events book series this year. This month I’ve read book #6 in that series. They’re all quite short and follow a similar concept so I haven’t given them any ratings. I’d rather just say I really enjoy these books and I can’t wait for the tv show to continue. I’ve got some theories thanks to the tv show so we’ll see if I was right about them.

Harry Potter and the Philospher’s Stone – JK Rowling

December is the perfect time for a Harry Potter reread so I did just that <3 I wanted to reread the rest of the series as well but I guess I’ll just have to continue in 2018. I love love love these books and I don’t think there’s anything else to say about them 😉

Because You Love to Hate Me – Ameriie

I think this was the first anthology I’ve ever read. It’s all about the villains in this one and I enjoyed it more than I thought I would. The stories are quite short, about 20 pages each so they are perfect for in between other books or when you don’t have that much time to read. I might actually start to read more anthologies now haha.

The Last Namsara – Kristen Ciccarelli

After meeting Kristen I finally picked up The Last Namsara this month. I was a bit scared to read it, a couple of friends of ours absolutely love this book and they raved about it a ton. I really hoped it could live up to the hype and luckily it did! I enjoyed it a lot and I’m already excited for the second book to see where this is going.

Truthwitch – Susan Dennard

This book had been on my wishlist for quite a while, I finally bought it with a birthday giftcard in March. Somehow I still managed to not read…. Our friend Willemijn got this book recently and that was the perfect timing for a buddyread. So I finally picked it up. It was a bit challenging at first, you read about this complete new world where you have to process quite a lot of information. It took me a while to grasp everything but once I did I read the book pretty fast and I fell in love with the world and the characters. I’ve got the second book lined up and will start it soon!

This is what we read this month. How was your reading month? Any favorites we need to check out?
