We are at that time a year again when everything is turning into Christmas. Of course there are enough books with a Christmas theme, but also many shows and movies! So this isn’t a complete bookish item, but we wanted to share some of our favorites with you all!
Books
What Light – Jay Asher
This is a book I read last year and really enjoyed! The main character’s family have their own Christmas Tree farm, but business hasn’t been doing well. They are preparing for this to be their last year. It definitely gives the Christmas cozy feeling and it’s a fast read.
Let it Snow – John Green, Maureen Johnson & Lauren Myracle
I read this two years ago. I got it from my Secret Santa that year. I basically read it in one sitting. Another fast and enjoyable read that gets you in the Christmas spirit. Even though this book has three different stories, they all weave together in the end. I know there is a movie/will be a movie? Have to see it eventually.
Dash & Lily’s Book of Dares – Rachel Cohn and David Levithan
I really enjoyed this one. It’s a cute story. The guy finds the notebook on the shelf at a bookstore and sees dares in it. This is used for the two main characters to communicate, who are both having certain issues with the holidays. Definitely another feel good book. Last year the second book came out (The Twelve Days of Dash and Lily). This book was enjoyable, but I liked the first book better.
Harry Potter (ALLLL of them) – JK Rowling
I love reading Harry Potter around Christmas and actually started rereading the first one this week. It’s such a magical feeling and especially reading about Christmas at Hogwarts gives me a very festive feeling! Not to mention Yule Ball or Christmas with the Weasleys <3 Oh how I wish we could actually be part of all that!
Movies
Santa Clause
This is an older movie, as the others on this row are, haha. But these will always be favorites and I try and watch this every year. Tim Allen is funny and I love the idea that when Santa dies, there is one that takes over automatically. Body changes and all, haha.
Home Alone
Another classic. Though I have to say I still haven’t seen the third one. It just doesn’t fit for me. I love the holiday feel of this movie and the decorations in that house are amazing!! I don’t think I will ever get that they get all the way to another country before figuring out they left a kid at home.
The Muppet Christmas Carol
I remember watching this with my cousin for the first time a long time ago and loving it. The Muppets have always been a favorite of mine and they give the perfect twist to this classic story.
TV Shows
As a kid I (Candyce) always thought of all three of these as movies, but they’re not. None of them take longer than a half an hour to watch, haha. I guess being a kid makes things seem longer.
A Charlie Brown Christmas
This is a family tradition. Every year this movie has to be watched (I watched it last week, haha). We even have a video of my uncles doing the dance all the kids on stage are doing. I will definitely pass on this tradition to my future kids. It will always be a favorite.
Frosty the Snowman
Okay, adding this one made the song get stuck in my head. So I will be singing that in my head for the next few days. Again, another one I grew up with and love. I mean come on, who doesn’t like the singing snowman?
Santa Claus is Coming to Town
I grew up with a lot of classics as you can see. This is another one of them. To a point it’s kind of traumatizing as a kid to think there would ever be a year without Santa. Luckily, like most Christmas stories, it ends happily ever after.
Songs
What’s Christmas without some songs? These songs take us right back to childhood Christmas and are still favourites. We also both veto-ed one we couldn’t stand anymore haha.
And I just had to include these two gems for the Dutchies! These might be my absolute favourite Christmas songs but they’re in Dutch 🙁 The first one’s got some pretty dark humor in it, precisely how I like it haha.
These are some of our favorite Christmas stories. Do you see any you also enjoy? Or other ones we definitely have to check out? We would love to hear about them.
Lovvveee those movies and shows so much
I love all your choices! I always try to do a re-read of the Harry Potter series this time of year. The only book I’d add is The Polar Express, by Chris Van Allsburg. It’s technically a children’s book, but it really is timeless.
I also love your movie picks and I’d just add Gremlins and It’s a Wonderful Life. I’m really excited because Netflix is adding all three The Santa Clause movies at the beginning of the week. I’m going to have so much fun binging!
I have never read the book of The Polar Express. Loved the movie though. The other movies you mentioned are awesome as well! We decided to only do a few per category or this post would become a book, haha.
The book is even better. The illustrations are gorgeous!😊
I will have to check it out!😊
